Robert “Rob” Hippensteal, an Electrician Constructor Crew Chief at King County Metro Transit, has been nominated for Shop Steward of the Month by one of his peers in recognition of his unwavering commitment to protecting the rights of his fellow members.

For years, Rob has been a steadfast advocate for Unit 138, successfully pursuing grievances involving unpaid wages, scheduling violations, and other contractual disputes. He has also been instrumental in defending apprenticeship programs, industry qualifications, and established electrical safety standards, ensuring that proper training and qualifications remain a priority in the workplace.

What sets Rob apart is his commitment to representing all members, regardless of classification. He is known for his thorough preparation, attention to detail, and willingness to tackle difficult conversations. Whether supporting members through investigations, addressing workplace concerns, or advocating at the bargaining table, Rob consistently shows up, answers the call, and stands firm in his commitment to the membership.

Nominated by fellow IBEW Local 77 member, Justis Tena, Rob is recognized not only for his technical expertise and deep understanding of the contract, but also for the example he sets for others. Justis credits Rob with inspiring him to become a Shop Steward himself, describing him as “the best electrician and shop steward I know.”
